Vietnam and Tet Offensive Casualties

In all of the Vietnam War there have been about 2 million deaths on both sides. The United States has lost about 58,159 people 1,724 are missing and 303,635 are wounded. South Vietnam lost 220,327 troops and 1.17 million are wounded. South Korea lost 4,960, Laos lost 30,000, Thailand lost 1,351, Australia lost 520, and New Zealand lost 37. In all U.S. and other allies lost 315,831 troops.

The Communists lost 1,177,446 people in all. They lost way more than the South Vietnamese and U.S. armies, but they still are considered by most to be the winners of the war. The North Vietnamese army lost 1,176,000, the Chinese lost 1,446, and the Soviet Union lost 16.

In the Tet Offensive there were a total of 48,620 people that died on the U.S. and allied forces. The Communist forces lost 111,179 people. In the battle of Hue 668 American and South Vietnamese died and 8,113 of our enemies were killed. In the battle of Khe Sanh the allied forces lost 4,044 men and the NVA lost an estimated number of men from 10,000 to 15,000.

The U.S. and South Vietnamese inflicted massive casualties on their enemies, but still weren’t considered the winner of the war. The NVA had so many men it didn’t matter that much that they lost so many men. Ho Chi Minh the North Vietnamese leader said, “Kill ten of our men and we will kill and of yours in the end it is you who will tire.” For every person the NVA killed the South Vietnamese and Americans killed about 6.

Tet Offensive

This is a first draft of a piece about the Tet Offensive. I'm not looking for critical feedback yet because it is just a first draft.

The Tet Offensive was a series of attacks launched by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese army starting on January 31, 1968. It was the lunar New Year and the U.S. and the South Vietnamese were caught off guard. On the first day, the Viet Cong attacked Saigon with 1,000 troops. They attacked the airport, presidential palace, ARVN headquarters, and got into the U.S. embassy area. Before the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese armies attacked they had attacked outside the city to draw the U.S. out then attacked Saigon.

The North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong lost about 100,000 men in the Tet Offensive. In all they lost about 1.2 million men in the war. The Tet Offensive was considered a failure by the North Vietnam Army and the Viet Cong, but because they had so many troops in all they were able to recover. The U.S. and its allies had about 46,000 casualties.

At first the U.S. and South Vietnam were taken by surprise, but they quickly recovered and caused massive casualties on the Communist forces. There were many battles in the Tet Offensive, but the Battle of Hue was one of the biggest. It lasted about one month, and 668 U.S. and South Vietnamese were killed and 8,113 North Vietnamese were killed. The Battle of Khe Sanh was another big battle the U.S. and the South Vietnam allies killed about 15,000. The U.S. and South Vietnamese lost 4,044 troops.
